Why do we have fat in the body?

Fat is used in the body to store energy. When we eat and have extra calories that we might want to use later, our bodies turn the calories into fat and store them for later use.

How is fat stored?

Although many people think of fat as being like butter, it is actually held within cells.

A very fit 45 year old lady who, despite exercise and diet, couldn't get rid of the abdominal "roll".

These fat cells can be thought of as being like balloons filled with fat - then groups of these cells are held together by loose connective tissue.

Therefore fat cannot “flow” between different areas - it stays in the areas that it is formed in.
